Portugal wine production expected to be 8% higher this year

The volume of wine production, at around 7.4 million hectolitres, also represents a year-on-year increase of 12% compared to the average of the last five campaigns, the IVV said in a statement.

 

Wine production in Portugal is expected to increase by 8% in the 2023/2024 campaign, to 7.4 million hectolitres, compared to the previous campaign, the Institute of Vine and Wine (IVV) announced on Monday.

The volume of wine production, at around 7.4 million hectolitres, also represents a year-on-year increase of 12% compared to the average of the last five campaigns, the IVV said in a statement.

According to the institute’s forecasts, resulting from the consultation with the representative Regional Entities, the Douro (+10%) and Lisbon (+10%) regions are the ones with the largest increases in volume compared to the last campaign, with increases of more than 100,000 hectolitres.

In the Dão region “no variation in production is expected”, said the IVV, while in the Madeira region the forecast points to a slight decrease (-1%) compared to the 2022/2023 campaign.




The IVV also points out that an increase of 8% in wine production, compared to the previous campaign (2022/2023), is due to the fact that 12 regions registered growth in volume (hectolitres).

The data collected by the IVV also indicate that, in general, the grapes are in a “good phytosanitary state”, thus allowing it to foresee a “good quality production”, subject, however, to the climatic conditions that occur until the harvest, the statement concluded.
